President Mutharika hints at hiring 20 member Cabinet by June 21

Malawi's re-elected President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika on Sunday hinted at hiring a 20 member “representative and functional" Cabinet which will be ready by June 21.

““I urge Malawians to be patient. It is not that easy to select only twenty people into cabinet out of over 17million people. I am currently doing background check for possible nominees. It will be a representative and functional cabinet, comprising of both young and old, men and women. I can assure Malawians that by the time I will be delivering a State of the Nation Address on June 21, a cabinet will be in place,” Mutharika told thousands of blue-clad supporters who attended a DPP victory rally at Njamba Freedom Park in Blantyre.

Mutharika, who is on record being the first Malawian President to whittle down from 40 to 18 ministers and deputies from his first term as Head of State in 2014, said he was looking at the credentials of his new team before unveiling the Cabinet.

He said he wanted the Cabinet to be representative of gender and be a functional one. “Take it easy. It takes time,” he assured anxious Malawians who are looking forward to the new team

Mutharika is due to open Parliament on June 21 in Lilongwe where in his national address he is expected to outline his development agenda for the next five years.

Appointing a twenty member cabinet was one of President Mutharika’s 2014 campaign promise, and was aimed at exercising prudence in the use of public resources.
