Chitipa Police Spokesperson Gladwell Simwaka says death toll in Chitipa Road accident has risen to nine from eight, with one person still in critical health condition.

The fatal road accident involves motor vehicle registration number RU1141 Fuso Fighter lorry driven by Kingsly Mlenga.

The lorry was coming from Ifumbo heading Lufita direction carrying about 72 passengers on board all members of African International Church.

“Upon arrival at Kaseye bridge the driver failed to control the motor vehicle at the bridge and it fell into the river and rested on its offside body,” said Simwaka in his initial reported, which had indicated that eight people had died on the spot.

62 others sustained various degrees of injuries, which Simwaka says “they are in a stable condition”.

Meanwhile, Chitipa District Commissioner Stuart Ngoka has said the council, together with the Department of Disaster Management Affairs, will assist the bereaved families.

“We have received a directive from the President that the bereaved families should be assisted with coffins, compensation and transport,” he said.
