Limbe police tightens security in readiness for independence celebrations

Malawi Police Service in Limbe – Blantyre says it has tightened up security in preparing for the country’s 54 years celebrations. After a long and bitter struggle, Malawi achieved its freedom from the British Empire on July 6, 1964. Since then the country has observed this day as its Independence Day.

According to deputy police spokesperson at Limbe Widson Nhlane, some of the security measures that have been put in place include increased visibility of police officers in all policing areas to reduce the incidents of crime.

 

“In readiness for the coming Independence Day celebrations, Limbe CID officers are on the ground to arrest all people connected to criminal activities and on June 26 this year, 44 suspects were cornered within the policing area,” said Nhlane.

 

He added that during the operation, police also managed to recover items which are suspected to have been stolen within the policing jurisdiction.

 

“The suspects have already been charged with offences such as; Theft, Burglary, Breaking into a building and committing a felony therein, robbery, receiving property suspected to have been stolen and operating liquor business without license. All suspects are to appear in court soon,” added Nhlane.

 

According to Nhlane, police carried out the exercise in areas of Maselema, Manje, Mpingwe, Limbe Market and Bangwe and it is an ongoing.

 

He has however appealed to members of the community to avoid harboring criminals but rather report them to police to create a crime free environment.
