According to Rev. Enald Banda who is the owner of the orphanage and his child was among the deceased, said the cause of fire which started around 9 pm on Saturday remains unknown although some people suspect candle fire.

“It was around 9 o’clock when fire gutted the house. One of the deceased came to take candle but I don’t believe its because of candle as he returned it after using in their room….its only God who knows its main cause.

“I keep 120 orphans but I took five to be staying with me. So far my work has proven to be futile….work without wages,” he said while tears overpowered his eyes.

Innocent Poul 18, the only survivor on the incident said he attempted to rescue his friends but it was too late.

“I woke up realising nothing. When I realised that there was fire the other room I found my friends no more as this was happening while in our sleep,” he said.

Central Region Police Spokesperson Ramsy Mshane said the investigations on the matter are underway.

The children’s bodies were laid to rest on Sunday just behind the orphanage in Msundu.
