According to press statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security said, ‘it has pleased His Excellency the President, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika to Pardon 268 prisoners.

The statement adds, ‘the 268 prisoners who have been pardoned are those who have served at least half of their prison sentences, with good behavior and were not convicted of serious offences.

The Pardon of the 268 prisoners which is a symbol of forgiveness as the country celebrates its 51st year of independence brings to 

 1054 prisoners the president has forgiven in his 13 months time in power.

Malawi has 13 000 inmates in her 31 prisons which is double its required holding capacity.
