Mwanjasi was speaking when the committee visited a 2.5 kilometres main canal which Lufilya WUA has renovated with funding from farmers to the tune of K1.7 million.
Mwanjasi said Lufilya scheme, which was constructed in the early 1970s in the area of Traditional Authority Kilupula, is facing a lot of challenges in managing water starting from the In-Take to the end where it dispose waste water.

“We have numerous challenges in the scheme starting from the In-Take, Main, feeder, minor and rubbish Canals. For instance the canals are deeper than the fields which makes it difficult for water to flow into gardens freely,” complained Mwanjasi.
He then called on government and the donor community to assist with funding to fully refurbish the whole scheme so that it becomes user friendly for farmers.
“Let me ask government and the donors to assist us with money to restructure the whole scheme because the remaining rehabilitation works require a lot of money…. If the Association has rehabilitated the main canal with funds from farmers so when given some assistance we will do more than this,” said Mwanjasi.
Lufilya rice irrigation scheme has 1000 acres of land with above 1,200 farmers and produces the best quality rice varieties of Faya, Kilombelo and others.
