The 450 members are the entire Chikwawa District leadership and membership of the MCP that was set by Sidik Mia.

According to the former district governor for MCP in Chikwawa-Makande Francis Tengani they have defected because of lack of intraparty democracy in MCP.

“There is no democracy in MCP. They are sidelining us, leaders that were duly elected, and working with those they just handpicked. Even in our day today interaction with traditional leaders, they never mince words but told us that leading MCP in this district will take us nowhere. So, apart from the issue of intraparty democracy in MCP, this move is also out of respect to the plea by our chiefs.

“With MCP, I erected 150 branches- with each one consisting of 90 members- and have all joined me on this journey into the DPP. While on district level- I have come along with all executive members of three constituencies and the entire district leadership,” said Tengani.

Speaking during the welcome ceremony of the new DPP members, Regional Governor for DPP in the South Charles Mchacha said the coming of MCP members to DPP is a clear indication of people's trust in the ruling party.

“What this means is that DPP has uprooted the entire district structure of MCP. They will have to start all over again while we move forward,” said Mchacha.

On his part, Member of Parliament for Chikwawa Central Zahir Gaffar Issa said the coming of new members will strengthen the party both in his constituency and the district at large.
