This comes barely a day when one of MBC employees Juliet Royo was also laid to rest at Henry Henderson Institute Cemetery on Friday.

 

The burial  was attended by people from all walks of life including practising and retired journalists.

 

Prior to joining MBC, Mponda worked with various local media organisations including the Times Group. He also corresponded with international media outlets such as the AFP,  Reuters among others. 

 

At the dawn of multiparty politics in the country  Mponda was Press Secretary for Chakufwa Chihana when he was 2nd Vice President of Malawi.

In his eulogy veteran journalist Don Napuwa who was representing the media fraternity  said Mponda was a hardworking journalist and ever since he knew him at Malawi News Agency 40 years ago he has remained true to the calling of Journalism.

 

"He was more than a work colleague. He was like a senior brother to most of us. His unique character was dedication to duty and friendliness. Journalism has lost," mourned Napuwa.

 

Traditional leaders said apart from his professional work, Mponda was man of the people in his home village.

 

They said he would also be remembered for being  instrumental in resolving  land disputes in the area.

A dedicated Catholic, Mponda is survived by a wife and five children.
