“This is our way of thanking the President for the magnificient tarmac road,” Paramount Chief Kawinga told the DPP victory rally in Mangochi addressed by the President himself.
The Paramount said Mutharika thrashed his rivals in the May 21 vote in order to continue developing the country, including the Liwonde-Machinga road, saying it will spur economic development.
In acknowledging the gesture, Mutharika said: “Who am I to refuse what the chiefs have agreed.”
Mutharika thanked people from the region for voting for him. “You supported me, I will also try to support you to uplift your life.”
He said the eastern region gave him 157,000 votes, from only 57,671 votes in 2014 when Atupele Muluzi of UDF grabbed most of the votes.
