Malawi elects first female Speaker

Catherine Gotani Hara, MCP legislator for Mzimba North East has been elected as Malawi’s first female Speaker of the 193 member parliament.

She was elected following a secret ballot cast by 191 parliamentarians, winning by 97 votes against 93 for Esther Mcheka Chilenje, DPP MP for Nsanje North Constituency.

 

In what was an all female contest, Catherine Gotani Hara triumphed. She is a Political Science graduate from Chancellor College and Brighton University in the UK.

 

She once served as Minister of Health, Environment and as Deputy Minister of Transport and Gender.
