DPP and UDF strike alliance

The ruling Democratic Progressive Party DPP and United Democratic Front (UDF) have entered into an alliance effective Tuesday, February 25.

Breaking the news at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika said DPP has strong links with the UDF as such it was necessary to work together for the good of the country.


“I am particularly glad to welcome back UDF brothers and sisters. As you all know we belong to one family although we are taking different paths. We hold similar values, we are both democratic, peaceful and development oriented parties.


“We share similar aspirations to improve the living standards of all Malawians in this country we are all determined to achieve this. We’ll proceed to work as an alliance as we consider a possibility of a coalition. This alliance has been founded on our common values and our goal is to unite and develop this country,” said President Mutharika.


On his part UDF’s president Atupele Muluzi said the alliance demonstrates DPP’s commitment to honour the majority views of Malawians.


“His Excellency the President has shown a true willingness to develop a real partnership that we hope will be able to demonstrate as we present a joint vision for Malawi.


“The UDF and DPP have a long history. Throughout the last Government we have able to demonstrate that we can work together for the good of the Malawi. During the last period of Government I had the honour to serve Malawi within His Excellency’s cabinet across a range of roles. I hope that through our renewed partnership we will be able to offer all Malawians with a positive choice that is based on deep and real experience of governance,” said Muluzi.


Earlier On DPP’s Secretary General Grezeldar Jeffrey emphasized that the two parties’ alliance will have a positive bearing on the country.

“DPP and UDF believe in the adage that there’s power in unity. This is not the first time that DPP has worked alongside UDF. In addition all Malawians know that DPP emerged from UDF so we are one,” said Jeffrey.


The signing in ceremony was attended by prominent members of DPP and UDF parties.
