Irish, Tanzanian envoys present letters of credence to APM

On Monday, envoys from Ireland and Tanzania, Gerry Cunningham and Benedict Mashida respectively, presented their letters of credence, to President Peter Mutharika at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, marking the official beginning of their tours of duty as representatives of their respective countries.

Both diplomats pledged to promote the best interests of Malawi and their respective countries in the areas of diplomacy and development.


On his part, Irish’s Cunningham said his government would continue providing technical assistance to Malawi in the sectors of agriculture and social cash transfers to improve the living conditions of people.


Cunningham assured President Mutharika that Ireland was still committed to supporting Malawi’s agricultural sector by promoting the growing of pigeon peas, cassava and potato that stand harsh conditions of drought.


“The President expressed his keen interest in many areas which Irish Government is engaged like agriculture and nutrition. We are working in the areas of Agricultural research- working to diversify into new crops. This year, we will also be expanding to two more districts on social cash transfer program. We are working with other governments and donors to make sure that all districts are benefiting from the facility,” said Cunningham.


Taking his turn, Tanzania’s Benedict Mashiba said during his meeting with President Mutharika, they have agreed to further strengthen the two countries’ bilateral relations in areas of trade, communication and transport.


Said Mashiba: “We had very good discussions with President Mutharika about strengthening our relationship. He is very concerned with trade, communication and transport. These are the major areas. ”


The two enjoys will be resident in Malawi.
