According to the Member of Parliament for Phalombe East Amosi Mailosi areas of Nkhulambe and Nazombe are the most hit. He said the villages affected with armyworms include Samire, Wera, Namazambara, Mbeza, Madeya, Chitawotawo, Nthowa and Kapito.
Mailosi expressed gratitude for the swift response by Agriculture officials from Nkhulambe EPA who soon after getting the reports rushed to the scene to make assessment of the devastation the armyworms were causing in the maize fields.
"The [assessment] preliminary report indicates that about 60 hectares have been affected by the armyworms. When this report was written we linked up with the Phalombe District Agricultural Development Office whose team rushed in very quickly with some pesticides. However looking at the gravity of the problem we really need more support from the District, Blantyre ADD, and where necessary even the Ministry of Agriculture should come in very quickly," appealed Mailosi.
According to Mailosi, Nkhulambe EPA produces a large stock of maize supply enough to feed the entire Southern region hence it will be disastrous if the problem does not receive the urgency it deserves.
