'Government not sidelining North'

Written by  Sam Phiri

Government has dismissed the remarks made by some members of parliament from the Northern Region that the region is being sidelined.

Recently government announced 6 projects that are being funded by the Chinese government.

And speaking in parliament on Tuesday, November 10 2015, members of parliament for Mzimba west Harry Mkandawire and Kamlepo Kaluwa of Rumphi East observed that all the six projects have been spread between Central and Southern region saying the move demonstrates that the DPP led government does not have the priority of Northerners at heart.

But when asked, Leader of the House in Parliament Francis Katsaira said the allegations are unfounded.

He said among others the projects coming into the country are not regional but national projects.

“When we build a stadium, hotel or a university it’s not for people in that area only but for the whole nation. There is no way somebody can bar anyone to go into the Bingu national stadium due to their regions of origins” said Katsaira.

He said several projects are allocated to areas according to the requirements of the projects.

“I will give you an example of the Kammwamba power plant, apart from the electricity benefiting all Malawians, we took advantage of the rail to transfer coal from Moatiz in Mozambique so it could have been difficult to place it in the north.” further added Katsaira.

He said facts have it that the region has benefited from the Mombera University, the Karonga Chitipa Road, the Nkhatabay Hospital project, the Karonga Songwe road, the Njakwa-Livingstonia road and even the national ID project which is for all Malawians.

Before Katsaira addressed the House, UDF chief Whip in parliament Lilian Patel who is a parliamentarian for Mangochi South asked her Northern regions counterparts to stop the unnecessary ranting because the eastern region which is quite has not got any project from the second phase of the Chinese funding.
