Be agents of peace, MEC tells candidates

Chairperson for the Malawi Electoral Commission MEC has appealed to Presidential candidates in the forth coming fresh Presidential election to be advocates of peace.

Justice Dr. Chifundo Kachale has made the remarks in Lilongwe where he is addressing a press briefing in the company of MEC commissioners.

Justice Kachale said all the presidential candidates have an important role to play in ensuring that the nation holds a free, fair and credible election.


On challenges in MEC's level of preparedness ahead of the fresh June 23 Presidential poll, Dr. Kachale has disclosed that the Commission's budget stands at about K34 billion, against K29 .6 billion which government has allocated for the exercise its proposed 2020 - 2021 National Budget.


According to Dr. Kachale, MEC has so far received K20 billion for the exercise, pointing that the Commission will ask government for additional financial resources to carter for its planned expenditure.


He has further disclosed it will not be easy for the commission or party representatives to physically monitor the printing of ballot papers currently underway in Dubai citing restrictive measures in the wake of the COVID - 19 global health pandemic.

The MEC Chairperson has since rated it's level of preparedness ahead of the poll at "55 to 60 percent."
