Coronavirus: Malawi’s First Lady advises ‘prevention is better than cure’

Malawi’s First Lady Professor Gertrude Mutharika on Wednesday advised Malawians that “prevention is better than cure” in dealing with the deadly Coronavirus which has killed thousands of people across the globe.

“For Malawi to be safe, all of us have to do our part. Prevention is better than cure,” Mutharika said at a state luncheon at Sanjika Palace, in recognition of the BEAM Trust and Merck Foundation Medical Fellowships and award of media for the ‘More Than a Mother Initiative.’

 

She said Coronavirus, commonly known as COVID-19, had affected many countries, saying: “No country is safe, Malawi is not safe.”


The First Lady commended the Ministry of Health and other government departments for being active in trying to contain the disease that has rattled the globe.


Coronavirus, which originated from Wuhan province in China, came from animals and causes pneumonia, with those reported ill  suffering from coughs, fever and breathing difficulties.


The World Health Organisation has now described Coronavirus a pandemic.
