MCP's Chakwera leads by 8,970 votes in preliminary round

Dr. Lazarus Mccathy Chakwera, presidential candidate of the Malawi Congress Party, was leading by 8.970 votes against DPP torchbearer Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika as of Wednesday night.



Chakwera polled 533,217 votes, representing 37.65 percent. Mutharika, who came second, bagged 524,247, which was 37.01 percent of the vote, MEC Chairperson Justice Jane Ansah announced at the national tally centre before journalists, international and local observers, diplomats and political parties.


Saulos Klaus Chilima came third, with 293, 978 tallied votes. Atupele Muluzi of the UDF, was fourth, scooping 48,766 votes. This was 3.44 percent.


Other contestants performed in this way: John Eugines Chisi ( Umodzi Party), 5,786 votes, 0.30 percent; Peter Kuwani of Mbakuwako Movement for Development (MMD), 6,113 votes (0.43 percent).

Independent candidate Reverend Kaliya went home with 4,308, which was 0.30 percent of the vote.



The MEC Chief  said 35.67 percent of the 6,859,570 million total registered voters had been tallied by the Commission.


Final results are expected to be announced within the stipulated 8 days after polling day, which was on May 21.
