Political parties pledge clean campaign

Political parties in Nkhotakota North and Nkhotakota North-East constituencies have pledged to conduct a clean campaign ahead of the May 21 polls.

The pledge was made on Wednesday at Nkhunga Police Station by aspiring candidates of various political parties on the sidelines of Anti-political violence meeting the station organised.


Speaking in an interview with MBC, Officer In-Charge for Nkhunga Police Glinton Mitayi - Deputy Commissioner of Police appealed to the aspiring candidates to desist from any violence by among others using the youths in disrupting other people's rallies.


In the same vein, Mitayi encouraged the candidates that were drawn from DPP, UTM, MCP, PP, UDF and Independents to stick to issue based campaign which he described as one of the tools in as far  avoiding political violence is concerned.


Mitayi took time to remind  the candidates of the need to follow all the procedures when securing venues for their political rallies. On handouts, he reminded them of the new Political Parties Act which prohibits them.


The OC then appealed to the pastor's fraternal to take a leading role in encouraging their faithfuls not to engage in political violence as many of their members belong to various political parties.


He further reminded the potential MP's and Councillors that insulting the Head of State is an offence as such they should make sure that during their campaigns they should abide to that.


He made it clear that police will not relent in arresting anyone who  engages in political violence regardless of his/her political grouping.


Station Officer Senior Superintendent Patrick Lupoka cited places such as hospitals, schools, police and military barracks where campaign meetings are not allowed to be held.


Traditional Authority Kanyenda pledged to give equal space to all aspiring candidates with a call to them to avoid name calling during their campaign meetings.


Nkhunga Police Station covers two constituencies of Nkhotakota North and Nkhotakota  North-East.
