MEC to hold by-elections for councillors by June

The Malawi electoral commission has disclosed that it will hold elections in all wards that currently do not have councilors.


Over four wards were left without councilors due to death with the recent being the death of Zomba City Mayor Joana Ntenje who was the only female mayor in all the four cities.

According to MECs communications manager, Sangwani Mwafulirwa the commission is awaiting the approval of the budget which has been submitted to the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development.

“Yes we are bound to conduct elections in all wards that do not have councilors in the country by June this year and parties will be notified soon,” said Mwafulirwa.

He said upon the approval of the budget we will communicate to parties on the way forward on the process.

Some of the wards that are vacant are Nsikizi ward in Mangochi, Chibanja Ward in Mzuzu and Khwawa Ward in Karonga.
