62 people have also been hospitalized at the Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe.

Among the dead are seven kids and one female.

According to the reports the gates which were supposed to be open by 6 AM were opened at around 9:30 which caused pressure to people who gathered to watch the game between Nyasa Big Bullets and Airtel cup holder of 2017, the Silver strikers.

Meanwhile, President Peter Mutharika has condoled the bereaved families on the sudden loss of their loved ones and wished those injured a quick recovery.

When the news of the stampede was brocken at the Bingu International Convention Centre, where the Independence prayers were being held, a minute of silence was observed in honour of the eight.

Mutharika is also expected to lead the congregation into viewing the dead bodies and cheering the 62 that are being treated at KCH.
