Man arrested for assaulting ex-wife

A 32-year-old man Tonnex Kaminga was on Monday fined K20,000 or face 12 months imprisonment for assaulting his ex-wife.

Court on Monday fined Tonnex Kaminga K20, 000 or face 12 months Imprisonment with Hard Labour (IHL) for being found guilty of unlawfully wounding his former wife.


Senior Resident Magistrate Ben Chitsakamire Thyolo Magistrate court in twist of events also ordered Kaminga to be kept in custody to answer the charge of theft of electricity transformer oil.


On October 3, this year Kamanga went to reconcile with his estranged wife, Margret Lucius, 38. The negotiations broke down without any reconciliation.


He returned the following day to persuade Lucius but to no avail which made him furious.


He grabbed a metal bar and hit victim on the head. A medical report from the district hospital indicates she sustained a deep cut. She is still being treated at the hospital.


Lucius said the reason she did not want to reunite with her husband was a family matter and did not want to comment further.

Edith Kachotsa, Public Relations officer in the district told the Malawi News Agency that Kaminga was arrested on the charge of assault but it transpired in court that he is a seasoned criminal.

Chitsakamire ruled; “The hereby accused is fined K20,000 or in default face 12 months imprisonment with hard labour.


“In light of the new charge brought here, the court orders that you be kept in custody to answer the case,” said Chitsakamire.


Both Kaminga and Lucius come from Traditional Authority Nchilamwera in Ntholo district.


In a related court case, Second Grade Magistrate, Mtunduwatha Mkhwazi fined Christopher Makabali, K40,000 for flogging and hauling his four year old step son on a bicycle leaving him with a fractured leg.
