Monkeybay Police Public Relations Officer Alice Sichali said the state prosecutor Sub Inspector Elias Chitsulo told the court that on  January 12, 2021 at around 01:00 am, the victim was fast asleep when she met her fate.

Sichali said: "The convict broke into the girl's room, tied her up and forced himself on the victim. The girl tried to shout for help but her voice could not be heard coz the convict had blocked her mouth,"

Sichali added that the mother who slept on the other room heard strange noise from the victim's room so she went to check on her daughter only to find the convict who was her cousin on top of the girl in the middle of the act.

The matter was reported to Monkeybay Police Station where it was established that the victim was indeed raped.

The accused person pleaded not guilty in the court of law and this prompted the state to parade five witnesses which proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.

In submission the State asked the court to give stiffer punishment since he was a close relative to the victim.

Senior Resident Magistrate Rodrick Michongwe concurred with the state and slapped him with 21 years in imprisonment with hardlabour.

Gwaladi comes from Kalowa Village, Traditional Authority Nankumba, Mangochi District.
