Bishop Mtumbuka launches football tourney for peace

Bishop Martin Mtumbuka of the Karonga Catholic Diocese believes it is important to educate people about the dangers of violence, especially the kind that leads to the brutal killing of the elderly.

Mtumbuka said this at the launch of a K4 million football tournament. Teams from Traditional Authorities Kyungu and Kilupula are expected to participate in the tourney. According to Bishop Mtumbuka, the football competition seeks to raise awareness and put an end to the killings of the elderly who are suspected of practicing witchcraft.

Vincent Bwinga, Project Coordinator for Conflict Transformation at Karonga Diocese Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) said the tournament will contribute to stopping the violence against the elderly.

“The Bishop’s Peace trophy is a tool we’re using to educate the community about reducing violence, resolving land disputes, chieftaincy conflicts, and combating witchcraft,” said Bwinga.
