Youths urged to help in building climate resilient societies

Youth in the country have been urged to actively engage in climate change issues to protect future generations from the challenges arising from climate crisis.

National Coordinator for National Youth Network on Climate Change, Dominic Nyasulu, made the call at Mzuzu University (MZUNI) on Saturday during an interface with youth from some areas in the north.

Nyasulu emphasised the need to strengthen capacity for inclusive climate negotiations, stating that the future is in their hands.

Head of Fisheries Department at MZUNI, Kumbukani Mzengereza, said youth inclusivity in climate change initiatives is a step towards achieving the 2063 agenda, which also emphasises on environmental conservation and the development of eco-friendly mechanisms to mitigate climate challenges.

Laboratory Technologist at the university, Beatrice Mbamba, who was one of the participants in the meeting noted that the training was an eye-opener in promoting community awareness about the effects of climate change, highlighting that young people are crucial in building equitable and climate-resilient societies.

Statistics indicate that in 2016, Mzuzu experienced severe flooding due to climate change, affecting 15 settlements, displacing 19,000 people while leaving others dead.
