Malawi possesses the potential to produce food consistently throughout the year via irrigation farming, according to Wester Kosamu, Chairperson of the Greenbelt Authority.
He was speaking during handover ceremony of Lweya Irrigation Scheme in Nkhatabay District to contractors tasked with rehabilitating it.
“I am convinced that it is only a matter of time before we will be able to feed ourselves throughout the year,” he said.
He was equally happy that the people of Lweya have recognized the importance of initiating rehabilitation works for the irrigation scheme.
“With what we have seen in irrigation schemes at Nkopola in Mangochi, Nthola Ilola in Karonga, Chipoka in Salima, Dwambazi in Nkhotakota and other schemes, I am convinced that it is only a matter of time before we will be able to feed ourselves throughout the year,” Kosamu added.
He stressed that the initiative aligns well with President Dr Lazarus Chakwera’s vision of making Malawi self-sufficient by enhancing agricultural productivity and commercialization.
