Veteran broadcaster, Nyokase Madise, who died on Monday night, will be laid to rest at Madise Village, TA Mtwalo, in Mzimba District on Thursday.
Born on 30 April 1939, Madise joined MBC in 1964 as a presenter, reporter, and producer.
During her 30 years at the national broadcaster, she rose to the position of Assistant Controller.
Before that, she headed the Women’s Desk and was the first producer and presenter of Women’s World, a development programme that tackled issues affecting women in Malawi and beyond.
She also produced and presented Song Book Days, Writers Corner and other radio programmes.
Besides, she was an outside broadcast producer for live coverage of late President Ngwazi Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda.
Among the highlights of her career was covering state banquets, including one when Queen Elizabeth visited Malawi.
The second female to be employed by MBC, she was also a studio producer.
Her training with the BBC was instrumental in all this.
After retirement, she worked for a number of radio stations, including TransWorld Radio.
Her media presence opened the way and provided the impetus for Malawian women to join the broadcasting industry. She was later joined by such names as Joyce Ng’oma, Mercy Chipeta, Maria Chidzanja Nkhoma, among other top presenters, who worked for the mother station.
Nyokase Madise was mother to Supreme Court Judge Dingiswayo Madise, National Council of Sports Chair, Sunduzwayo Madise, Professor Nyovani Madise and former Netball Association of Malawi President, Khungekile Matiya.
