Unima’s school of arts advocates for mindset change

The University of Malawi’s school of arts, communication and design has called for mindset change among Malawians over arts and design courses.

Speaking at a press briefing in Blantyre, Executive Dean of the school of arts communication and design, Associate Professor Mufunanji Magalasi, said time has come for Malawi to take arts and designs as any other careers that can equally compete at international level.

He said with the restructuring that public universities have undergone, the schools will offer specialised courses that would give students in-depth knowledge of art that will balance the theory with practice.

“The approach to this is that the students in 3rd and 4th year will be attached to professional artists both locally and internationally. We will bring professional firmmakers, musicians and fashion designers gurus to work with the students for a performance, a production, fashion fair and concert among others and this will be showcased locally and internationally,” he said.

Magalasi said the university has collaborations with other universities in countries such as Zambia, Kenya, Ghana, Mali, France United Kingdom and USA among others.
