Founder of Community of Sant’ Egidio, Andrea Riccardi, says solidarity is important to overcome the challenges that Malawi and the entire world are facing.
Riccardi said estimates show that poverty would increase next year due to an economic crisis that can be attributed to the war in Ukraine.
“Next year will not be easy. Economies will be in a crisis. Poverty levels will go up and many people will become poor. This will also affect Africa,” he said.
Riccardi called for unity as one way of overcoming the foreseeable crisis, pledging the organisation’s continued assistance to the people of Malawi.
“At Dream Centre, Sant’ Egidio will continue to provide Covid-19 vaccine. We will also continue to assist those infected and affected by HIV and AIDS. Overall, we will continue to assist in the improvement of the Malawi health systems,” he said.
The community of Sant’Egidio is a Catholic organisation dedicated to social service.
Currently, the organisation assists around 20 thousand people in Malawi.
Riccardi is visiting Malawi on a humanitarian mission.
This is his second visit to Malawi in six years.
