Scorchers registers first win at COSAFA

Malawi Women’s National Football Team have secured their first win in the 2024 COSAFA Women’s Cup, defeating Madagascar 1-0, thanks to a 7th-minute goal by Asimenye Simwaka, who beat the defence and goalkeeper.

This victory places Malawi second in Group B with 4 points, level with Botswana but separated by goal difference. Madagascar sit in third with 3 points, while Mauritius are at the bottom with no points.

Throughout the first half, the Scorchers consistently applied pressure, especially through Simwaka, Sabina Thom, and Catherine Kachala.

They dominated possession and created numerous chances, but a lack of clinical finishing prevented them from extending their lead.

Sabina Thom thought she had doubled Malawi’s lead in stoppage time, but her goal was ruled out for offside in the 93rd minute.

On Monday, the Scorchers will return to action to face Mauritius.
