Scientists studying the South East Africa Mountain Archipelago of Malawi and Mozambique have established 127 species endemic to the region.
The study, published today in the Nature Scientific Publications, looks at the botanic, animal and insect data as well as its geological, climatic, and rainfall patterns of more than 30 mountains in Malawi and northern Mozambique.
Led by Professor Julian Bayliss of Oxford University, the study involved 26 authors who included botanists, entomologists, mammologists, and sociologists.
One of the authors, botanist Zachariah Magombo, who is the Acting Director General of Botanic Gardens of Malawi says the study has also established that in the past 20 years, some areas have lost one fifth of their bio-diversity and therefore called for multi-country efforts to conserve and preserve the unique ecological diversity.
