Road users applaud government for M1 Road rehabilitation

Road users in Mponela in Dowa have applauded government for the rehabilitation of a road stretch from Lilongwe to Mponela.

They say once completed, the road will enhance road users’ safety, transportation and communication services in the district.

Speaking in an interview on Wednesday, Edward Stefano of Chitete Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mponela, said unlike in the past, the new road will, among others, reduce road accidents.

“We are happy that government has moved in with speed to rehabilitate the road. There were many potholes and the road was not wide enough to accommodate many road users at a time,” said Stefano.

Christopher Khanangaya, a truck driver, said the initiative would improve delivery of goods and services.

“Due to the bad state of the road, we could spend several hours to reach our destinations. We therefore applaud government for this,” said Khanangaya.

President Lazarus Chakwera launched rehabilitation of the M1 Road in July 2022.

Supported by the European Investment Bank, the 300 Kilometre road, which runs from Lilongwe to Rumphi, will cost about MK126.3 Billion.
