The Private Schools Owners Association of Malawi (PRISAM) has expressed its support for the Teachers Union of Malawi’s (TUM) proposal that starting from 1 July 2024 all teachers must obtain a licence to practice in the country.
According to the TUM, the requirement applies to teachers at all levels: nursery, primary, secondary and university.
Charles Kumchenga, Secretary General of TUM, emphasised that Malawi must license teachers as a means of ensuring professionalism within the teaching profession.
He believes that this step will contribute to maintaining high standards and promoting ethical conduct among educators.
Ernest Kaonga, the President of PRISAM, echoes this sentiment, stating that a licensed teacher signifies commitment to the profession and adherence to the established professional criteria.
“Being licensed demonstrates a teacher’s dedication to continuous improvement, practical experience and the acquisition of knowledge and skills,” said Kaonga.
“Licensure not only assures the profession to uphold its ethics but also provides the public with confidence that educators have met teaching standards and are fully prepared to enhance the delivery of the services,” added Kaonga.
