The Malawi Police Service has confirmed about the death of one of its officers, Sub Inspector Petros Mhango of Soche Police station in Blantyre, during a raid and ambush operation in Chileka in the city.
Confirming the incident to MBC, National Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya said Mhango was accidentally shot by his fellow officer during crossfire with robbers.
According to Kalaya, the police had received a tip that some suspected criminals were planning to steal from a certain man in Chileka.
The police then rushed to the scene where they found the robbers in the act. The police officers started shooting at the robbers and accidentally, one bullet landed on Mhango who was pronounced dead upon reaching the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.
During the raid, the police officers shot dead two robbers.
