The Private Schools Owners Association of Malawi (PRISAM) and the Independent Schools Association of Malawi (ISAMA) were summoned by the Parliamentary Committee on Education on Wednesday to discuss how best the two associations can assist in the development of education in the country.
PRISAM was represented by Ernest Kaonga, while ISAMA was represented by Wycliff Chimwendo.
During the meeting, Kaonga requested that the government incorporate private school teachers into the training programmes for the new curriculum.
Kaonga further explained that most private schools have teachers who are not well trained, highlighting the need to encourage the registration of schools.
“Some schools operate despite many shortcomings. Let me assure the committee that, as PRISAM, we are ready to assist the government in ensuring that only eligible schools are allowed to operate,” said Kaonga.
Ephraim Nayeja chaired the meeting on behalf of Parliament. Recently, parliamentary committees have been active in discharging their oversight roles in various sectors of the country’s economy, including education.
