Parliament has passed a loan authorisation bill to allow the government borrow money in excess of K150 billion from NBS Bank, National Bank and CDH Investments for the Salima – Lilongwe Water Supply Project.
The Salima-Lilongwe Sater Supply Project, among others, is aimed at providing potable water supply to Lilongwe, Salima and Dowa districts.
The project is also expected to create direct and indirect employment during the construction period.
After the bill was presented by Minister of Finance Simplex Chithyola Banda, spokespersons for both DPP and UDF supported it.
Ben Phiri of DPP commended the government for the bill, saying Lilongwe, as a capital, needs quality potable water.
He also asked Capital Hill to ensure that irrigation is boosted in all areas along the water supply pipeline.
The commendation was also echoed by Ned Poya of UDF.
The bill was first tabled around April 2023 and through the amendment, CDH Investments has been roped in as a third financier.
