The number of Mozambicans fleeing to Malawi due to the ongoing political conflict following disputed election results in their home country has increased to 2,497 households, up from 2,000 households, Nsanje District Commissioner Dominic Mwandira has confirmed.
Mwandira says government, through the District Council, has provided shelter for them in evacuation centres and primary schools.
He added that a place to relocate some of them has already been identified within the areas of Senior Chief Tengani, Senior Chief Mlolo and Traditional Authority Mbenje.
According to Mwandira, the government through the Department of Disaster Management Affairs has also provided maize flour and beans to the Mozambicans.
“We are working with relevant stakeholders to make sure that these people have received the necessary support. We reported the matter to the Department of Refugees in the Ministry of Homeland Security and other concerned organisations,” he added.
Nsanje borders three districts of Mozambique, Doa, Mutarara and Molumbala.
Political conflict resurfaced in Mozambique since the Constitutional Council announced Daniel Francisco Chapo as the winner of the October 9 elections.
Resistência Nacional Moçambicana (RENAMO) leader, Ossufo Momade, is disputing the results.
