MZUZU CITY MAYOR ARRESTED FOR DEFILING MINOR

Police have arrested Mzuzu City Mayor Councilor Gift Desire Nyirenda on suspicion that he defiled his 14-year-old niece.

Public Relations Officer for Mzuzu Police Station, Paul Tembo, said the mayor allegedly defiled his niece for five consecutive days starting from 1st August to 5th of August 2022 at his Luwinga residence in the city.

“It is alleged that the Mayor defiled her for the first time in her room and tried to silence her with K2,000 but she refused. The mayor reportedly threatened to kill her if she revealed what happened. During the nights of the 3rd and 4th of August 2022, he went again to the minor’s room and defiled her. The suspect has been defiling the victim for five nights and each night more than once except during the first night,” said Tembo in the report.

The report further discloses that the mayor promised to buy a cell phone for the victim for easy communication but she refused.

The victim was then chased away from the Mayor’s house and she reported to the Mzuzu Police Station victim support unit.

The victim was sent to Mzuzu Health Centre for examination and the results were positive.

The mayor is expected to appear in court to answer charges of defilement.
