Bridget Chimaliro, a 21-year-old resident of Ntandire Township in Lilongwe, has been granted a full scholarship by Maranatha Private Academy after a Facebook comment she made caught the attention of the academy’s founder, Ernest Kaonga.
Chimaliro’s comment was made in response to a post on the Makosana Page, which was commending the uniforms of Maranatha Girls Academy students. In her comment, she expressed admiration for the uniform and mentioned that she wished she could purchase one for herself, so she could wear it and boast that she was a student at the academy.
She humorously asked, “Kapena ndi mulandu kuvala uniform ya eniake?” (Or is it a crime to wear another school’s uniform?).
The Managing Director of Maranatha Private Academy noticed her comment and was moved by her enthusiasm. He decided to offer the Form 2 student a full scholarship, covering all her educational needs, including tuition fees, uniforms, books, and other expenses, until she completes her secondary education.
“I was delighted to read her appreciative comment about our school and her desire to wear our colours. I was determined to find her, get to know her, and ensure she achieves her dream of wearing a Maranatha uniform,” said Kaonga.
“I believe she deserves this opportunity, and I hope she makes the most of it. Now is her time,” added Kaonga.
Kaonga also mentioned that the academy is currently in discussions with Chimaliro’s guardians to finalise the scholarship agreement.
Maranatha Private Academy, under Kaonga’s leadership, has a history of offering educational opportunities to boys and girls from various backgrounds, particularly those in need, as part of its efforts to support the government’s educational development initiatives.
In June 2022, Maranatha Private Academy’s management committed to providing full scholarships to 40 female students from Shaping Our Future Foundation (SOFF) and other schools after they paid a courtesy call on Malawi’s First Lady, Monica Chakwera, who chairs the SOFF Board.
