M5 road bridges suffer rain water damage

Two bridges are believed to have been damaged by heavy rains on the M5 road in Nkhotakota District, which has washed away part of the anchors of the bridges.

Videos circulating on social media indicate that Kaombe Bridge, which is about 100km from Kaphatenga, is submerged in water while Nkhuyu Bridge, 190 km from Kaphatenga, is disjointed from the road by water.

The extent of the damage is not yet established as water levels are still high.

According to the District Commissioner for Nkhotakota, Ben Tohno, most bridges on the M5 road are overflooded by rainwater.

The DC has told MBC that though the district has received heavy rains, some of the water is coming from other rivers located as far as Kasungu and Ntchisi districts.
