The second phase of the voter registration exercise has kicked off in Mchinji with an unimpressive turnout at most centres, as observed on the first day.
Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is conducting phase two of the voter registration exercise in 14 councils including Mchinji.
A visit to several registration centres in the district revealed that some locations had only a few people registering, while others had none, with only registration staff present.
By 8:00 AM on Saturday, centres such as Kamuzu School, Bua Primary School, and Chapanama had all opened but reported low attendance. Similar low participation was observed at centres near Kamwendo Trading Centre.
The same was the case with centres around Kamwendo Trading Centre.
National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) Mchinji District Programmes Officer, Emannuel Banda acknowledged the low turnout and emphasised the need for increased awareness and sensitisation.
Mchinji National Registration Bureau (NRB) Principal Registration Officer, Maggie Msiska assured that the bureau will be present in the registration centres.
