Likangala Irrigation Scheme projects K2.5 billion revenue from this year’s farming season

Smallholder farmers under Likangala Irrigation Scheme in Zomba have projected K2.5 billion revenue from sales of their produce for this year’s growing season.

This came out when Minister of Agriculture, Sam Kawale, toured the irrigation scheme.

Likangala Irrigation Scheme

Likangala Irrigation Scheme is the largest in Zomba, covering 450 hectares.

The scheme cultivates twice per year with rice as the main crop grown during the rainy season, while maize, sweet potato, tomato and watermelon are cultivated during winter season.

Lloyd Taibu, president of the scheme, said a good number of farmers have been economically empowered through the scheme.

On his part, Kawale said the success stories of the scheme are a clear demonstration that the country is making progress with irrigation farming.

With funding from the World Bank, the scheme has been under rehabilitation through Malawi Resilience and Disaster Risk Management Project.
