Institutions providing poor quality food to children — Committee

The Social and Community Affairs Committee of Parliament has established that most childcare Institutions in the country are providing poor quality food to children and that there is poor coordination between such institutions and District Social Welfare offices.

Chairperson of the Committee, Benard Chitekwe, disclosed this in Parliament when he presented the Committee’s report after a number of field visits to some childcare institutions in the country to appreciate the welfare of children.

Chitekwe said most of the institutions are facing challenges such as staffing and inadequate funding.

The committee has since asked the Ministry of Gender to intervene.

Meanwhile, Minister of Gender, Jean Sendeza has acknowledged the challenges and said as a line ministry, she will bring a comprehensive report on the situation and what the government is doing to deal with the challenges.
