Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Samuel Tembenu made the remarks in Salima during a handover ceremony for a guardian shelter at Maganga Health Center. The guardian shelter has been constructed with funding from former Irish Ambassador to Malawi Aine Hearns. The development emanates from the request the Justice Minister put forward to the former Irish Ambassador as a way of enhancing Safe Motherhood, sexual and reproductive health challenges women in the area of Traditional Authority Maganga in Salima were facing. Speaking during the ceremony Tembenu praised the Irish Government for the shelter.

“It is very important that in our cooperation with the Irish Government we should be in a position to articulate development needs that require their support. In my Interaction with the former Ambassador I raised the issue of a need for a guardian shelter at Maganga Health Center. Out of that discussion, here we are, we have that building that will go a long way in serving the community here,” said Tembenu.

On his part the Irish Ambassador to Malawi, Gerald Cunningham applauded the cooperation and community spirit that people in the locality showed during the construction of the facility funded by his predecessor. He described the project as a milestone in improving delivery of health services in the country.

“We are very happy to handover the structure. This has been a partnership with the community as they contributed labour, sand and bricks. I think this is a good sign where one sees communities taking part in development in a manner like this,’’ said Cunningham.

Maganga Health Center serves a population of over 30,000. On average three women deliver per day totaling to 90 new borns per month.
