The first couple is therefore calling on all Malawians to use the the Holy month to pray for peace, love and unity among Malawians. Ramadan falls at different time each year because the Islamic calendar is based on lunar cycles.

During the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast, they don’t eat or drink between sunrise and sunset, which is important during the Holy month as they devote themselves in prayer. Those that are in transit (travelling), pregnant women, children and the elderly are exempted from fasting.

It is also worth noting that fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam, the other pillars being prayer, charity, faith and making the pilgrimage to the Holy Mosque in Mecca.

This year Ramadan commenced on the evening of Wednesday May 15 and ends on June 15
