Director of Climate Change in the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services Jolamu Nkhokwe said people should not panic as the cold weather is expected to end by Friday this week.
Nkhokhwe said there was nothing unusual about this cold weather following an announcement that was made in May to signal the beginning of the winter season which is still in season.
“The winter season is characterized by the high cold air because of the high pressure system that passes through South Africa which carries with it the cold air from the Southern Polar region which pumps that air to our country and other neighboring countries,” said Nkhokwe.
He said the temperatures of the winter season will continue to drop in low volumes and there may be vulnerability to effects of sneezing and coughing; with valleys and cold areas experiencing frost.
