The focus of football has now shifted from the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations’ (Afcon) final match between Senegal and Algeria to the 2021 Afcon’s qualification draw where Malawi national football team, the Flames, has been drawn in Group B together with Uganda, Burkina Faso and the winner of a preliminary round match between Seychelles and South Sudan.

The draw took place in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday evening on the sidelines of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) General Assembly. Meanwhile, the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations is coming to an end today.

The Flames will start the campaign from the group stages of the qualifiers that will be preceded by a preliminary round involving eight teams determined by the last FIFA Rankings.

The Group stage matches will kick off in November this year.

In the previous qualifiers, Uganda and Burkina Faso have been Malawi’s opponents, but this will be the first qualification encounter between Malawi and both Seychelles and South Sudan.

The Flames only qualified twice to Afcon in 1984 and 2010.

Next edition of Afcon qualifiers has 12 groups consisting of four teams each and “the top two sides from each group will qualify for the tournament that will be held in Cameroon,” confirmed CAF via its official Twitter handle @CAF_Online.
