Mshali said this on Sunday in Mzuzu when the Mzimba North Sports Development Office presented some cash towards the maintenance of the boxing ring at Obrigado Leisure Centre.
Mshali however said that the facility requires more funds to bring it to usable state adding that most sports disciplines including boxing face a lot of challenge including lack of infrastructure.
“Sports disciplines in the country such as boxing lack proper infrastructure and this has affected its development. As you remember the recent bout between Felix Mwamaso and Alick Mwenda was not very enjoyable because the bad shape of the ring. So as government we thought it wise to come forward and assist mainly in the maintenance of the ring,” Mshali said.
She therefore appealed to the corporate world to come forth and assist boxing as a complement to government efforts.
Receiving the cash on behalf of the committee, the former Chairperson of Northern Region Boxing Committee Stuwart Moyo thanked government for the assistance saying it has come at a right time.
“We need to raise K500 000 for the maintenance of the ring. So the coming in of government with such a donation, we are very grateful,” Moyo explained.
He added that several people including Mwenera Transport and Chisanga Hardwares owners Kaunda and Chisanga Kaweche respectively have pledged to assist in the maintenance of the ring with bags of cement and timbers.
Meanwhile, the ring staged a bout between Jobson Adams from Lilongwe and Laston Kaira from Mzuzu as part of fundraising efforts where they expect to get 50 percent of the gate collection.
