Minister of Sports, Youth and Labour, Grace Chiumia, said this at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on the sidelines of the national finals for Presidential Women Football Cup.
The final game between sworn in rivals DD Sunshine Football Club and Skippers FC brought a lot of excitement to the spectators as the two teams displayed some fantastic football. DD Sunshine were the first to find the back of the net though the lead was short lived as Skippers FC pulled an equalizer moments later.
In the second half Skippers FC maintained a narrow lead after adding another goal but at final whistle DD Sunshine carried the day with a 3-2 comeback.
Speaking during the ceremony, Minister of Sports Grace Chiumia said she was impressed with the level of play and reiterated Government’s commitment towards development of women footaball.
“ Government will continue supporting these sporting initiatives because they keep youth productive and this is where we draw players for national team assignments,” said Chiumia.
On her part, Chairperson for the tournament, Syveria Chalera said the games went on well and managed to achieve the overraching goal of unearthing talent among women footballers in the country.
“ The tournament has ended very well.We have seen girls displaying good football quite a marvel to watch. As a committee we are very happy and the organisation was good. We are also very encouraged with the patronage, you can appreciate that a lot of people came to watch the finals. This is good for development of the game,” said Chalera.
DD Sunshine carted home K3 million while Skippers FC got K1 million. Other awards included; Player of the Tournament that was won by Skippers FC’s left back Fatsileni Kazembe. Losing semifinalists received K500,000 each and former Nyasa Big Bullets player, Andrew Chikhosi, who coaches DD Sunshine, scooped the Best Coach Award.
