The trophy which will be called M’Mbelwa King’s Trophy will see each traditional authority in the district represented by one team.
According to chairperson of the organising committee, Kondwani Lungu, the trophy is also one way of engaging the youth in the district and distracting them from migrating to South Africa for greener pastures.
“It has pleased his Royal Highness Inkosi ya Makhosi M’Mbelwa V to organise this trophy to foster unity among the people of Mzimba through interactions with his brothers (all T/As in Mzimba).
“Inkosi also knows that many young people from Mzimba flock to South Africa because of lack of opportunities hence this trophy will bring excitement and youth engagement in the district,” said Lungu.
He also added that the trophy will act as a way of promoting grassroots football in the district.
“Inkosi would like to see many players from Mzimba playing in super league teams and also representing the Malawi national team at all levels,” added Lungu.
Apart from other activities lined up during the launch of the trophy, the Super League outfit Civil Sporting Club will play a select team from Mzimba district.
