General Secretary for the Association Suzgo Alpha Nkhoma was speaking at Mphatso Motel in Mzuzu during the National finals of draughts in the Presidential Initiative on Sports tournament.
Nkhoma said the tournament is assisting in developing draughts in Malawi and finding potential players who can represent the country in international draughts competitions.

“Our Association is facing a lot of economic challenges… so we thank the Malawi government for giving us money for the tournament,” said Alpha Nkhoma.
He then called on the corporate world to assist the Association with finances resources to hold as many tournaments as possible and explore more Talents.
“This game is for everyone including the physically challenged people and so we ask the corporate world to come in,” pleaded Nkhoma.

The General Secretary said the tournament has assisted the Association to identify the champion who will represent Malawi to the World Draughts Competitions in Russia the coming October, 2015.
He added that the Association was intending to host an international draughts tournament by November 2015 in Blantyre with financial assistance from Malawi government and the International Draughts Federation.
During the Finals, which took place from 30th to 31st May 2015, Lilongwe based Enock Makoka Banda emerged the champion and received K75,000 a trophy and Gold medal while his teammate Madalitso Thom Juma came second and walked away with 65 thousand kwacha with silver ware.
Jalasi Matiyasi from Blantyre was third and got K55,000 and a Bronze medal.
Speaking to Journalists after the games, The Winner Enock Makoka Banda said he felt honoured and humbled to defend the Championship.
“First I thank God and I feel honored to defend the title. I am now aiming to become the first Malawian Gland Master,” said Makoka Banda.
For his part, Madalito Juma who came second admitted his defeat saying the race was tough and promised to do well next time.
The Tournament drew together 28 draughts players from across the country for national showcase in Mzuzu City.
